Description

I've just recently updated this one and gave her A CRAZY LONG BACKSTORY. ENJOY!

In mythology, mermaids were creatures so beautiful, that sailors would drown trying to swim out to reach them. This is Ocidea Razorgill. She is not overly fond of other mermaids and tends to drive them off whenever she encounters them. Being a lone predator of the tides and a fierce fighter, she respects creatures that share her ruthless will to survive.

In the depths of the ocean, there are monsters of such a colossal size, that they are considered more to be forces of nature rather than just animals. Unlike animals, some of these beasts are not born or sired. They are created by the raw fury of the ocean itself. Sometimes after immense storms, maelstroms, or tidal waves, an egg is created. Forged by the pressure and essence of savage nature herself, these eggs contain the potential for sheer destruction. For within them are the young forms of krakens, leviathans, serpents, and other gargantuan terrors of the deep. Yet like most things, these young titans are small and vulnerable, for the sea has a tendency to devour her own. Being without a parent, many of these eggs do not survive.

This is Ocidea Razorgill. She is somewhat larger and more aggressive than most of her mermaid kin. Not being overly fond of others of her kind, she prefers the company of sharks and other underwater predators. She is entranced by both the serene beauty and the silent ruthlessness that such creatures possess. Their lack of vanity and their incomprehensible motives dazzled her to no end.

It was a bleary day over the ocean when she discovered her first chaos born egg. A recent storm had laid waste to a fleet of warships, leaving the human survivors to float among the wreckage. Ocidea found herself swimming among the wreckage, out of morbid curiosity. At first, the survivors panicked upon seeing her shark-line form. When they realized she was a mermaid, they desperately reached out to her, clinging to her fins and demanding that she save them. She was horrified and repulsed by their touch. As more and more of them attempted to grab ahold of her, she thrashed about and swatted them with her tail. She sank her serrated teeth into the hands of the desperate sailors that pawed at her. Sickened by the struggling humans, she dove under the surface to rid herself of them. One of the men had grabbed onto of her tail fin, impeding her descent. She shoved him off angrily and turned to attack him when, suddenly, she heard a strange sound. A wail from deep below, unlike the sound of any creature she had ever heard, greeted her. It was an eerie cry that sent chills down her spine. Nevertheless, she was drawn to it. Her powerful tail propelled her towards the ocean floor. Through the gloom she saw a school of Great Hammerhead sharks. They circled what appeared to be an egg attached to the sea floor. It pulsed with luminosity and movement could be seen within. The wailing cries seemed to be coming from whatever was inside. Drawn with a predatory hunger, the sharks closed in and took frenzied bites out of the egg. Ocidea would have none of it. She closed the gap and intercepted the alpha female of the group. Relentlessly, she delivered heavy blows with her tail. When the shark turned to attack, Ocidea threw her arms around it and proceeded to bite the face of the animal. Overwhelmed by the ferocity of her attack, the huge shark withdrew into the rest of her school. The mermaid curled defensively around the egg and watched as the sharks ceased their attack. They circled her location nervously, giving her plenty of space now that her dominance was asserted.

When the egg suddenly split open, Ocidea felt a surge of power from within. The creature inside emanated a raw, primal energy that humbled her. Were she capable of getting goosebumps, they would have raised on her skin. The creature was absolutely monstrous, and unlike any animal known to her or her kind. The bright red eyes glowed from within as it struggled to free itself from the membrane of its birthing pod.

The remoras that swam alongside of her hid behind her tail in fright. Ocidea herself easily suppressed her fear. She felt an overwhelming connection to the newborn and a sense of pity. It was so small and vulnerable compared to the predators that circled above. Unlike them, it was unique and kinless; the only one of its kind in an incomprehensibly vast ocean. Ocidea reached into the egg and pulled the creature from the membranous confines. It slithered around her, imprinting on the mermaid. It growled softly in her ears as she petted its monstrous head. Ocidea could sense that the creature was hungry. She tilted her head upwards towards the surface, rife with the drowned and drowning. As if responding to the motion of the mermaid, the hammerheads ascended and began to attack the stranded humans. Their screams of terror drifted down to the seabed. Ocidea turned a cold shoulder to the plight of the humans. Her compassion was focused on the creature that now draped itself about her shoulders. It was hungry, and she was more than willing to feed it. Slowly, they swam upwards to join the sharks. From that day forward, Ocidea called the creature Hadolus. To those on the surface world, however, it would become known as the Jaws of the Abyss.

Ocidea cared for the creature as it grew. She deterred all manner of underwater predators, even battling a giant squid that had risen from the deep. Hadolus began to accelerate its growth. She realized that it would need to be moved to deeper waters before too long, Beyond the Southern Straight were a series of trenches that reached into endless darkness. Ocidea managed to convince the Kraken, Tsunahali, to let her and her companion pass through the straight. Once it was in such open waters, Hadolus's growth became even more rapid. Within the next few years, it had become as large as a whale.

The day soon came when Hadolus was discovered by humans. They greeted the beast with harpoon and cannon-fire. It roared in pain and raged forth, bringing its fury down upon the heavily armed ship. Ocidea could only watch fearfully as the battle ensued. It battered the ship with its serpentine tail and dug into the sides with its crustacean legs. The wicked fangs of the beast ended the lives of those that assaulted it from the deck. It ripped a hopelessly large hole in the side of the vessel. As the ship was swallowed by the sea, its armaments fired one last time into Hadolus. Furious and badly wounded, the beast followed the doomed vessel down into the darkness, continuing to attack it. It swam passed Ocidea, howling in agony. She cried out and tried to follow the creature. When it dissapeared into depths where she could not follow, Ocidea broke down in tears. She was left completely alone in water turned red with the mingled blood of man and monster.

Years passed, and Ocidea continued to brood. She wandered the world in search of more of the eggs. She found many broken ones, and many that had been savaged by aquatic predators. She was not as sucessful at defending the live ones that she found, leaving her to despair. Her own kind shunned her for associating with such monsters. Only the sharks welcomed her company. She drifted in their cold and comforting silence through the seas.

She had given up hope as the highest tide rose. She stopped swimming and watched as the school of sharks passed her by. They disappeared into the gloom, unaware that she had ceased to follow them. She sat suspended in the empty, open waters consumed by her own desolate grief.

From below came a great sound. It grew into a long, deep roar. Ocidea's heart was sent into a flutter. She peered into the dark blue abyss below in anticipation of whatever was rising up from the deep. From the gloom a pair of glowing red eyes emerged. The colossal head of Hadolus rose from the darkness. It had grown to titanic proportions beyond imagination. It gave a familiar low rumble at the sight of Ocidea. She laughed tearfully at the sight of the monster. It had returned to her after all of the years. She joined the ascending leviathan as it roared triumphantly. At the surface, a great storm could be seen brewing in the distance. Soon another egg would be formed, and this time, Ocidea would have no trouble protecting it.
